HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY TOGETHER?

Author of: “Our Life on the Run: A Story of Running 50 Marathons in 50 States--A Family Quest”

The book in and of itself is very inspiring with universal appeal.  However, Marlin shares with the audience the “Story behind the Story”.  He dives deep into common challenges most all parents face at one time or another.  By bringing an understanding of the “Bigger Picture”, he explains that parents and teachers are playing on the same team and shows how they can enhance their communication.

Marlin’s talk is very thought provoking as it keys in on two aspects of “Vision”.   As we walk the path of life we are constantly encountering the “fork in the road”.  One direction leads us astray and we end up becoming a burden to society while the other allows us to continue to be contributors to society.  Marlin provides meaningful insight that assists students in making the right choices on their own.  He also explains how parents and teachers can be better guides in some of the more challenging situations.

His talk consists of 3 parts:

THE PROBLEM

  • The first signs...begin with limited vocabulary
  • Our child has no friends
  • Homework means: tension / frustration / yelling / crying …and then mom does it
  • Our child has become alienated, withdrawn, and rebellious
  • It matters to us what other people think

THE SEARCH FOR A SOLUTION

  • Begins with the fear that an alienated child will seek a way to escape from life’s realities either through: drugs, alcohol, gangs, crime, or even suicide
  • What are we doing wrong as parents
  • The Absent Dad issue
  • Kids are impressionable…let’s impress the right way
  • The concept of creating a family quest
